How Many Computers Do You Need to Build a Network?

Introduction

When we design a computer network, it depends on our needs, scope, and requirements of the network. If we have a small or medium organization, then obviously we will need small numbers of computers. But, if our organization is large, there will be dozens to hundred numbers of computers. However, to understand this question, how many computers do you need to build a network? We will break down the requirements, considerations, and steps for building a network.

1)      Purpose of the Network:

  • Home or SOHO (Small Office/ Home Office): For basic tasks such as MS Office, internet browsing, Emailing, file sharing, and printing will typically need 1-5 computers. This type of network will also consist of a Wi-Fi modem or access point. Other devices may also be included in it are smart phone, printer, scanner, etc.

  • Small Business:: Small business has more requirements than SOHO networks. This type of network consists of 10-50 computers/laptops, a medium-sized router and switch, a firewall, 1-5 printers (depending on needs), a photocopier machine, etc.

  • Enterprise Level: In larger enterprises or organizations, the number of computers may range from hundreds to thousands. These computers support various departments, advanced segmentation, security policies, and interconnectivity across multiple sites.

2: Devices Required

The requirements of devices depend on the needs of an organization, whether it is small, medium, or large. However, the following devices are essential for the network:

  • End Devices: End devices include computers, smartphones, printers, IP Phones, etc
  • Access Point: Access Point enables us to connect to the network through wireless.
  • Routers: Routers connect our private network to the external network. The installation of routers in an organization depends on its needs and requirements.
  • Switches: Typically, our computers or end devices are connected to the switches.
  • Firewall: The firewall filters the incoming and outgoing traffic.
  • Servers: There is no need for a server in the SOHO network, however, you can install it if it is required.

3: Network Types

  • Peer-to-Peer (P2P): Home or SOHO office computers are directly connected to the internet, where a server is not required.
  • Client-Server Network: This type of network is necessary in situations where management and security are mandatory. Here in this network, we install a server to control or monitor end devices.

Conclusion

The number of computers installed in a computer network depends on its scale and purpose. To build a network for CCNA students, you can start from 2 to 5 computers connected through switches and routers. At the CCNP level, there will more computers and other network devices may be required, like firewalls, access points, WLC, IPS/IDS, ISE, etc.
